Inflation in France fell from 13-year high in January but exceeded expectations.
France started the first months of 2022 with an inflation figure above the forecasts. This showed that the European Central Bank should consider a more gradual exit from crisis incentives, unlike the USA and the UK.
In January, annual inflation in the Eurozone’s second-largest economy was 3.3 percent. The median estimate of economists was 2.9 percent. Inflation was 3.4 percent in December. Inflation also increased by 0.1 percent on a monthly basis.
While there were increases in the service sector and food prices, energy costs increased by 19.7 percent in January. Energy costs rose 18.5 percent in December.
Higher-than-estimate inflation figures were announced yesterday in Germany and Spain.
French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire made the statement yesterday in a radio show that “if everyone makes an effort, we will easily get through this period.”
